Mr. Vegas Shines At Reggae Rising

August 8, 2008

Kingston, Jamaica - Mr. Vegas has been quite busy on the entertainment circuit. Performing in locales throughout the world, this stronghold dancehall artist is always anxious to thrill fans. And this past weekend, he did just that --- taking his show on the road to the 2nd Annual Reggae Rising Music Festival (produced by People Productions) in the northern tip of California.

t was a special weekend for Mr. Vegas and his ensemble as they touched down on the picturesque setting, which included a remarkable backdrop of the Eel River. Much different than they anticipated, the eclectic Reggae Rising Music Festival was one to be rivaled. With three performance areas, outdoor camping and loads of special treats and concepts uncommon to most festivals, the three-day event played home to a thorough line-up of Reggae artists and thousands of revelers.

Although they went through planes, trains and automobiles to get to the event, it was very much worthwhile in the long run. At the festival on Saturday, August 2, Mr. Vegas shined -- delivering a 60-minute impressive set of numerous hits. But the most exciting element of the performance was High Energy dancer Boricia, who enticed the crowd as she moved to the pulsating beats. She enjoyed displaying the latest dancehall moves just as much as the crowd embraced her. Additionally, background singer Nicole Miller blazed during her solo performance. Her sultry vocals mesmerized the sea of fans.

Mr. Vegas was joined by other top Reggae acts, including Sly and Robbie, Lexxus, Junior Reid and none other than Jamaica's beloved crooner Beres Hammond. In just a few weeks, Mr. Vegas will be off to toast it up in Africa.

Lyrics: Tessane Chin-Messenger

August 8, 2008

Your words are weapons so use them wisely
Shooting down yah brothers with your lyrical bullets
Teaching the children to go to war
Don't you know?
Life or death comes from your tongue
It's poison or pleasure which side

Cut down yah sister with your piercing melodies.

I am not the writer
I am just the messenger
The end is nigh, don't close your eyes
I've got something to say but will you hear
I've got a burden to bear

Who will hear let him hear
Who will fight let him go to war
Who will dare to step out of line and
Live for truth withheld from all?
Who will speak let him speak
Who will sing let them say a word
Who will challenge the life we live
By trying to forgive?

Now everyday on the news the same
Somebody's dying and someone's to blame
They only tell you what they want you to hear
They speak of justice but nobody lives there.
We need a miracle to stay alive,
Cause breathing don't count no more we got to try
You woke this morning thinking that you're free
Or is that what you're controlled to believe?

I am not the writer
I am just the messenger
The end is nigh, don't close your eyes
I've got something to say but will you hear
I've got a burden to bear.

Chorus

I am not the writer
I am just the messenger
The end is nigh, don't close your eyes
I've got something to say but will you hear
I've got a burden to bear.
Now I am not pretending
Freedom is in ending
It's an illusion that you're fighting for
You're a slave to the system don't let them feed you lies no more

Chorus

Buju Banton Performs "American Prayer"

August 8, 2008

Buju Banton, one of Reggae/Dancehall's most celebrated artists was recently invited to be a part of Rock legend, Dave Stewart's new video, "American Prayer." The song, which was written by Stewart and U2 frontman Bono in support of Democratic Presidential hopeful, Senator Barack Obama, also features the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Macy Gray, Beyonce, Cyndi Lauper, Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, Joan Baez among others. Scott Seine, a representative from Stewart's camp spoke of Stewart's decision to involve Banton, saying, "We reached out to artists/actors that we knew were Obama supporters, but regarding Buju, Dave is absolutely in love with Jamaica and Dancehall culture music, so it made sense to reach out to one of its biggest stars." According to Stewart - who has written for Shakira, Gwen Stefani, and others - the inspiration behind the "American Prayer" clip came from the lyrics: "Bono crafting the words in a way that would make people think about the fact that ' America ' as a concept was a truly great idea, based on the bedrock of equality - yet something had gotten lost along the way, something had gone awry. I found it more pertinent than ever to release it now; to the moment America finds itself in, daring to re-imagine itself and its place in the world." The "American Prayer" music video will launch virally on August 14th and later air on the ABC's, The View, Thursday, September 18th, during Stewart's guest appearance on the popular morning talkshow.
