September 21, 2010

(NEW YORK,NEW YORK) - VP Records teams up with Wax Poetics Magazine to celebrate the launch of their reggae-oriented edition, Reggae Issue 43, available nationwide on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. The New York City celebration takes place at the Happy Ending Lounge on Thursday, September 23, and the Washington, D.C. soiree happens at Patty Boom Boom on Wednesday, September 29, 2010.

VP Records joins forces with Wax Poetics Magazine for their annual reggae release because it perfectly fits the label's 17 North Parade imprint, which was created to release oldies and specializes in foundation reggae music - the theme of this special reggae issue.
The NYC event will partner up with Deadly Dragon Sound's weekly Downtown Top Ranking party, and will be joined by VP Records' own Clive Chin and DJ Twice as the special guest DJs of Black Moses Sound, for this strictly foundation reggae event. This also kicks off Black Moses Sound's Asian tour, where they will spend three weeks in China and one week in Japan, spreading reggae music to the Far East.

Prosecution Plays Buju's Recording

September 21, 2010

(Ja Observer)
TAMPA, Florida — The prosecution called its main witness to the stand this morning as the second day of the trial involving Reggae superstar Buju Banton got underway in this city.

Alexander Johnson, the Colombian informant who is assisting in trying to secure a conviction against the artiste, testified that he met Banton on a flight from Madrid, Spain to Miami Florida. The flight lasted eight hours, Johnson said, and a conversation about drug dealing came up within an hour.
The prosecution then played recordings where Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, was heard telling Johnson, "I am about making money, straight up" and "I have 15 children to send to school".

Myrie was also heard asking Johnson if he had any contacts to acquire cocaine as he was willing to finance a deal. He also told Johnson that he did not have contacts in Venezuela and Panama but that he was involved in smuggling diamonds from Africa to Europe.

He was also heard telling Johnson that "It would be good to have our own contacts. I would like to start small with five keys as I don't want to take any risks".

The artiste also warned the informant that he should stay away from a man known as Lloyd Evans as "There are a lot of snitches in the game".

Myrie, dressed in a grey sports coat, shook his head while the recordings were being played. One of his female supporters covered her ears when the recordings were being played, while some chuckled in disbelief. Others seemed captivated by the recordings.

Yesterday Myrie's attorney David Markus told the court that his client was guilty of talking a lot and had made a crucial mistake of sampling contraband. He also painted Johnson as a well paid government informant who entrapped people to get involved in drug dealing.

Drug Enforcement Agent Daniel McCeaffrey also testified yesterday that despite investigating the artiste for a year, he had uncovered no evidence to suggest that Myrie was involved in any drug deal or had benefitted from any drug deal.

The court is now in recess and Johnson is set to resume his testimony at 1:30 Tampa time in courthouse 13A in the Gibbons US Court in downtown Tampa.

Downtown was a revelation, says Anthony Cruz

September 21, 2010

Selecting the perfect location for the shooting of his newest video was a no-brainer, singer Anthony Cruz’ confesses. “The single is entitled Back Downtown, so where else would I shoot it but in the heart of Downtown Kingston?” he queried.

It was with gusto that Cruz set out to make his video, arriving Downtown with Asha and the crew from before dawn. However, as the the sun broke through the sky and Downtown awoke from its slumber, Anthony Cruz also awakened to a new revelation.

“Mi neva know say a so Downtown nice,” he said in awe. “Look at all those buildings by the waterfront! I didn’t even know that the Bank of Jamaica building was right there (on Nethersole Place),” Cruz added, explaining that “as a country boy” he only passed through downtown on his way to the airport.“It was my first real opportunity to explore Downtown and meet the people and it was so inspiring. We really need to build back Downtown,” Cruz declared.

He spoke with pride about the resilience of the people. “Can you imagine a woman selling boil eggs in the early morning amidst the hustle and bustle of people going to work? How many people would think of that?” he asked rhetorically.

Then there was the senior citizen who said he was waiting for an opportunity like this to showcase his dancing skills in a music video and insisted on being transformed into a video vixen on the set of Back Downtown.

“Him baaaad!” Cruz exclaimed. “Asha says there’s no way he could edit him out.”

With Dean Frazer on top of Captain’s Bakery blowing his sax and the song blaring Downtown, it was a sing-along as people stopped what they were doing to absorb the events.

“The people dem endorse the song and everybody was singing it. The women were so affectionate … I sign autograph till my hand hurt,” Cruz declared.

He also had words of praise for the merchant who gave him bags of clothing from his store to give away to the people.

“This was the most memorable video shoot I have ever had,” Anthony Cruz stated, singing the chorus of the song -- People gone back downtown (Downtown nice again/Mi glad how the war ting done (Even though Mama lose her son).

A tribute to the creativity and the tirelessness of the people who live and work downtown, Back Downtown has a feel-good effect which Cruz says was deliberate, as he attempts to highlight the positives of Downtown in this post Tivoli incursion era.
